Enriching Global Perspectives: A-School’s Multilingual Offerings
At A-School, we are deeply committed to empowering our students with the linguistic and cultural competencies needed to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world. We believe that learning a new language is not just about memorizing vocabulary or mastering grammar; it is about opening doors to new cultures, building empathy, and preparing for global citizenship.
To support our “Whole Person Development” philosophy, we offer a diverse range of Modern Languages from Grade 5 through Grade 8. In addition to our core English and Chinese programs, students can choose from four distinct languages: Spanish, French, German, and Japanese.
Our primary objectives are to ensure that every student can:
- Communicate confidently and effectively in everyday social settings using their chosen language.
- Gain meaningful insights into the rich cultures, traditions, and histories associated with the language.
- Take ownership of their learning journey, working both independently and collaboratively with peers.
- Develop a lifelong passion for language learning and active engagement as global citizens.
Our Modern Languages Programme: Grade 5 – Grade 8
Our curriculum is designed to spark curiosity and build a solid foundation in the chosen language. Starting in Grade 5, students embark on a four-year journey focused on holistic language acquisition. We emphasize the four key skills—listening, reading, writing, and speaking—ensuring that students learn to use the language practically and naturally.
To best support our students’ diverse learning needs and prior experiences, we offer two distinct pathways: the General Stream and the Advanced Stream.
The General Stream (Spanish, French, German, and Japanese)
The General Stream is perfect for students who are discovering a new language for the first time. With two dedicated lessons per week, the curriculum focuses on building essential fluency at a comfortable, engaging pace.
In this stream, students will learn to:
- Understand and use familiar, everyday expressions and fundamental phrases.
- Introduce themselves and others with confidence.
- Ask and answer basic questions about personal details, such as where they live, people they know, and things they enjoy.
- Interact in simple conversations, provided the other person speaks slowly and clearly.
By the end of Grade 8, students in the Regular Stream will be prepared to achieve the first level of international proficiency in their respective languages.
The Advanced Stream (French and German)
For students who have prior exposure to French or German, or who demonstrate a particularly strong aptitude for language learning, we offer the Advanced Stream. This accelerated pathway includes five lessons per week, allowing for deeper immersion and faster progression.
In the Advanced Stream, students move beyond basic introductions. They engage with more complex texts, broader vocabulary, and nuanced cultural studies. By the end of Grade 6, these students will have mastered the foundational level, and by the end of Grade 8, they will have achieved a higher level of proficiency, enabling them to handle more detailed conversations and comprehend a wider variety of everyday situations.
Benchmark Exams: Our Targets
A cornerstone of our Modern Languages department is our alignment with internationally recognized standards, specifically the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) and the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) framework.
We strongly encourage our students to take these official benchmark exams. These certifications not only provide a tangible sense of achievement but also serve as globally recognized proof of their linguistic abilities.
Beyond the Classroom: Engaging the School Community
Language learning at A-School extends far beyond textbooks and classrooms. We believe that true fluency comes from immersion and real-world application.
Throughout the academic year, the Modern Languages Department organizes vibrant events to engage the entire school community:
- Language Week: An annual celebration featuring cultural showcases, interactive workshops, and activities that bring the languages to life for all students.
- External Competitions: Our students regularly participate—and excel—in prestigious events such as the Hong Kong French Speech Competition and the Hong Kong Japanese Speech Contest, building confidence and showcasing their talents.
- Cultural Excursions: We organize immersive trips to countries where the target languages are spoken. Whether it is an intensive German course in Germany or a cultural exchange in Japan, these excursions allow students to practice their skills in authentic environments and deepen their global understanding.
