Green Education

Green Resources at School

Solar Panel

To promote renewable energy and reduce carbon emissions, solar photovoltaic systems have been installed on the rooftops of our school buildings. The clean electricity generated supports daily campus operations and serves as a living laboratory for students to understand sustainable energy.

  • Reduce reliance on conventional electricity and lower greenhouse gas emissions
  • Integrate data monitoring into STEAM and science learning
  • Raise community awareness of renewable energy adoption

Infrared Heat-insulating Coating

Infrared heat-insulating coating has been applied to selected exterior surfaces to reduce heat absorption, improve indoor thermal comfort, and lower air-conditioning energy consumption—supporting a more energy-efficient learning environment.

  • Lower surface and indoor temperatures during hot seasons
  • Reduce energy use for cooling systems
  • Extend the service life of building materials

Our Strategic Frameworks (The "What")

Scope of Environmental Policy

Our environmental policy covers three interconnected pillars to ensure a holistic green education:

1. Environmental Infrastructure

Developing a green school campus with solar panels, vertical green walls, and herb gardens, and enriching the environment with endangered species, marine life, and native plants.

2. Environmental Management

Implementing clear environmental policies and management systems to reduce energy consumption, minimize waste, and promote sustainable practices across all school operations.

3. Effective Education & Activities

Designing practical, experiential learning events and activities that cultivate environmental awareness and actionable green habits among students.

Core Implementation Models

1. Spheres of Influence

We utilize a tri-centric approach to environmental practice. This facilitates student engagement across local, institutional, and communal scales—guiding them from sustainable choices at the household level, to green habits on the school campus, and ultimately to impactful advocacy within broader society.

2. Tiered Engagement Model

A three-tier participation framework designed to provide inclusive environmental education for the general student body while offering specialized leadership pathways for advanced learners (such as our Student Ambassadors).

3. Key Sustainability Pillars

A diversified portfolio of initiatives focused on comprehensive resource conservation. Our commitment to these pillars was recently honored with the prestigious Energy Management Excellent Award at the CLP Smart Energy Awards 2024, recognizing our major advancements in:

  • Renewable Energy: Deploying the largest campus solar panel network to actively power our facilities.
  • Smart Infrastructure: Utilizing automated sensors and time-control systems to eliminate resource waste.
  • Sustainable Operations: Supporting eco-friendly transportation and integrating green technology into daily campus life.

Green Initiatives in Action (The "How")

How We Achieve Our Goals

1. A-Sustainability Campus (Institutional Scale)

Our campus serves as a hands-on laboratory for green innovation. Aligning with our Key Sustainability Pillars, we empower students to become active problem-solvers by engaging in practical scientific inquiry—such as crafting upcycled planters, making recycled paper, and developing innovative eco-friendly alternatives like biodegradable plastics and edible water packaging.

2. G7 Life-Wide Learning Day (Communal Scale)

Our Grade 7 students take their stewardship directly out into the local community. During our annual Life-Wide Learning Day, students explore unique coastal habitats at the Nai Chung intertidal zone and roll up their sleeves for a beach cleanup, removing plastic litter to restore the sandy shores. The journey continues at the Lions Nature Education Centre, where they participate in terrestrial habitat tours, orienteering challenges, and collaborative stream-crossing activities that blend environmental education with team building.

3. One Person, One Flower Scheme (Household Scale)

Supported by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, this scheme promotes green awareness and a love for botany. The school received 260 Salvia splendens seedlings. To further our commitment to waste reduction, students creatively upcycled used plastic bottles into plant pots, learned transplanting techniques in the laboratory, and took their plants home to nurture—perfectly linking the institutional scale to the household scale.

4. Carbon Neutrality Student Ambassadors (Specialized Leadership Pathway)

In line with our Tiered Engagement Model, nine of our outstanding students were selected by the Education Bureau for the "2024/25 Student Ambassador for Carbon Neutrality Training Scheme". These advanced learners act as peer educators, embarking on an inspiring journey to learn about the District Cooling System, zero-emission hydrogen (H2) municipal vehicles, and the Tzu Chi Environmental Action Center, bringing their eco-friendly insights back to lead our campus.

Award-Winning Smart Campus Infrastructure (Institutional Scale)

At A-School, we don't just teach sustainability—we build it into our grid. Our campus acts as a live demonstration of modern energy management through several key features:

  • The Campus Solar Network: Boasting the largest school installation of solar panels in the region, harnessing clean, renewable energy to power our daily operations.
  • Smart Lighting Solutions: Sensors installed throughout the campus automatically manage lighting based on occupancy, drastically curbing unnecessary electricity consumption.
  • Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Stations: Supporting our community's shift toward eco-friendly transportation by providing dedicated on-site charging infrastructure.
  • Automated Irrigation Systems: Utilizing precise time-control systems to manage plant watering efficiently, conserving water while maintaining our vibrant green spaces.
